My Mild Obsession- the late 70's to early 80's

Due to the heavy snowfall we received in Michigan, I had to take indoor photos. I apologize for their fuzziness. ;0







Some of you may not know this, but I have a mild obsession with clothes from the late seventies to early eighties. Ever since I was little, I've felt drawn to that specific time period. This obsession, I feel, can be correlated with my parents. They were in their early twenties during that time and newlyweds. From music to fashion, their tastes from those years had a major impact on me.

Plus, the late seventies to early eighties brought such awesome sportswear looks to the forefront. As much as I like being a girlie girl, my go-to looks are always a bit sporty and preppy.

Random Tuesdays

Inspired by an article in Teen Vogue, I decided to try my hand at 80's makeup, but with a more wearable everyday look in mind. I probably need more blush and bigger hair to look truly 80's:








I was tagged by the wonderful Libs, of Not Here to Please You, to find black things in my bedroom. Little did Libs know that my whole room (and apartment) is decorated in black and white, so I'll just show you a few things.

The Psychedelic Furs have many amazing hits from the 80's: Pretty in Pink, The Ghost in You, etc. But my favorite will always be Love My Way. Especially when the song is playing in the background of a very awesome bathroom scene in the movie Valley Girl. It's just too perfect.

What I Wore Today: 07.08.09- Sloane Trenches

The weather has been back to doom and gloom. Which means I'm having to sport jackets just so I don't freeze my arse off. Truthfully, I get a major kick out of wearing jackets and coats. If only I could wear them around, indoors, like dresses. Now, that would be the life.

Yesterday, I received two very awesome books in the mail all the way from England: "The Official Sloane Ranger Handbook" and "The Official Sloane Ranger Diary." These books will be shelved next to "The Official Preppy Handbook." I know, I'm a big dork, but I just can't get enough of the late 70's / early 80's.

Early 80's Preppy & Punk

Besides the early 1940's, I would have to say that the early 80's is my fave when it comes to fashion, films, and music. I feel it all started because of my mom. She was quite stylish during my formative years, and from the time I could walk, I was enamored by her look. She was funky, punky, and classy all rolled into one fabulous young mother. She was my first fashion muse. I have so many fond memories: watching her get dressed for a night out with my dad, us dancing to her favorite albums in the living room, and singing our hearts out in the car to a New Order tune. The older I get, the more I realize how lucky I am to have such a cool, with-it mom.

So, with all that in mind, I can say that, hands down, one of my all time favorite movies is Valley Girl. The preppies, the punks, the star-crossed lovers....so awesome. I could list so many things that I love about this movie, but the two most important are, of course, the fashion and music.

Being a Gossip Girl fan, I was quite excited when the buzz broke about a spin-off show featuring a young Lily, which would take place in the early 80's in LA. When the episode, aptly named Valley Girls, aired I was pretty stoked. While the show wasn't perfect and there's still not definite word on whether or not it will air next fall, I would still watch it just for the fashion and music alone.

If you spot someone out and about in Marblehead or Boston, wearing a very similar outfit to Lily's (on the left), but sporting a vintage 80's tweed blazer from their mother-in-law, vintage 80's Pappagallo riding boots, switch the jodhpurs for skinny jeans, and that's me!!
