illustration now FEATURE

I'm so excited to post about this - it has been so hard keeping it a secret.
I received my copies today so can finally share with you that my work is featured
in TASCHEN's new volume of Illustration Now! (Vol.4)

I remember one of the first big coffee table books that I bought myself
when I was studying at art school was the first volume of Illustration Now!
so to actually be featured inside one is such a dream!

    I'm also happy to sit alongside 3 fellow Aussie illustrators that I admire;

There are some amazing illustrators inside and I can't wait to pour over it
with a big cup of tea and discover some new illustration loves!

Happy Wednesday - I hope it was a good one!

ageless beauty for IN STYLE UK

I was asked by the lovely Adele from In Style UK
to work on this illustration of four ageless style icons
for a story on the resurgence of the more mature woman
    in the fashion industry today.
You can't open a magazine without the beautiful eyes of
Claudia Schiffer, Kristen McMenamy or Helena Christensen
staring back at you, and Viv Groskop's article explores why.
But for that you'll need to pick up an copy of the April edition
with Gwyneth Paltrow on the cover!

As for the illustration we focused on these four amazing women.
    From L-R:

    Anna Dello Russo -
    Current editor-at-large of Vogue Nippon
and one of the most adventurous dressers in the world.
If anyone knows how to have fun with fashion its Anna!
(Have to give snaps to the lovely Jenn of LeFashion for
letting me use her photograph of Anna from NYFW as inspiration!)

    Elle McPherson -
    Is any introduction necessary?
Arguably the most famous body in the modelling industry.
And she's STILL got it (as witnessed on the runway of Louis Vuitton!)
    Flawless.

    Julianne Moore -
The muse of Tom Ford and face of Bulgari.
You can always count on Julianne to bring something interesting
to a red carpet event. I absolutely adored her in this pink
Lanvin gown at the 2011 Golden Gloves.

    Lauren Hutton -
Before Lara Stone, Vanessa Paradis and Georgia Jagger,
    there was Lauren Hutton.
Her gap is her trademark. Truly truly stunning.

    It was such an honour to be given such beautiful women to illustrate;
I had so much fun working on it.
    Thanks Adele!
    x

P.S Thank you SO much to everyone who has helped out
    with my Japan fundraiser!
I'm over halfway there now, so if any of you would
like to buy a print - please visit this link:
50% of every sale is going straight to the Red Cross.
    Please help spread the word.

teeny weeny feature in FRANKIE

Hooray hooray - im in frankie today!
Except they forgot to credit my illustration...so no one will ever know.
    Haha.
Unless they visit my blog. In which case 'Hooray - I'm in frankie!'

I'm not alone in my love for frankie, and i'm fairly sure it's every Aussie
illustrator/designer/creative's goal to one day be featured inside those
    perfect pages of goodness.
So, regardless of no one actually knowing that i'm it - i'm over the moon!

Come Fly With Me is representing Leeloo's 'Drawn From Fashion' exhibition
in the mag, and hopefully a good example of what you'll find at the show.
Not everything will be a fully fledged fashion illustration, but more taking
inspiration from various creations from LMFF designers over the years.
So you may see tulle and silk-clad girls whistling to birds, or silhouttes,
    or abstract interpretations.
    I, for one, am excited!

Hopefully it won't be long until everyone can start sharing some of these works.

tasmanian LIFE

I was very kindly asked to participate in the new 'fashion' issue of
Tasmanian Life magazine by my sweet friend Grace,
one of the magazine's journalistic contributors.
Unfortunately she took ill around the time of deadline and our story
couldn't be used. However the editor of Tas Life, Claire Andrews,
managed to find some time to write this sweet little piece for me just in time!
    Thank you Claire.
I was particularly happy to see them choose my 'Vanessa' illo which
some of you might remember was based on an insanely gorgeous
    shot by the fabuloso Zanita!

If you click on the image it should open up large enough for you to read.
Otherwise you can find Tasmanian Life in most newsagents.
(I assume perhaps Borders or Magnation for the rest of Aus.)

Hope you all enjoyed a sunny weekend!

CLEO

I am over the moon today!
A few weeks ago I did a little interview with the lovely Nicole Elphick
of Cleo Magazine for a spread she was putting together about fashion illustration.
I had no idea at the time, but found out today when I saw the pages,
that I have been featured next to my fave of all favvies, Kat Macleod!
    She is seriously my idol.
I would gush about her all day if you let me.
I just wanted to say that, because when I was at Art school I would moon
over her gorgeous illustrations, I even interviewed her for a school project.
So it's a really nice feeling to find yourself featured with someone
who has been such an inspiration to you and your work.
Happy days today, kids! Call me Richie Cunningham.

If you would like to read the interviews (also feat. Janelle Burger), pop out
and grab a copy of the October 2010 issue, with Taylor Swift on the cover.
It's plastic-bagged but I can guarantee there are some s-t-u-n-n-i-n-g editorials
inside! You even get a free French Connection t-shirt dress! Yay!

I hope you all had a great weekend.

the CATS MEOW

    The Cat's Meow
Christina Dietze photographed by Macushla Burke
    for Pulp Magazine Autumn 2010
    Illustrations by Kelly Smith

Sooooo happy to finally be able to share these with you!
Late last year Macushla Burke and I worked on another
collaboration together; you may remember our last one
which was called See Emily Play.
I have so much fun working with Cush and this particular
project was doubly fun as the model was a personal fave of
mine, both model and bloggy-wise, Christina Dietze of SRC783.
As you can see we were going for a sort of Witchy-poo feel.
Quite dark but pretty at the same time.

If you'd like to see them in print then you can pick up
the latest issue of Pulp Magazine which is on sale now in NZ
and should drop in Aus sometime over the next few weeks.
I've posted the layout on my facebook page which you can visit here.
(I gave you guys a few extra! Haha)

    Hope you like!

    XxX

P.S I was a bit overwhelmed the other day to see my followers hit 1000!
    YOWZA.
Thank you SOOOOO much to everyone who visits my blog
and encourages both me and my work.
To say thanks i'm going to have a special in my shop.
Buy any print and you can choose an Open Edition print for FREE!
Just leave me a note when you check out as to which one you would like!
Will keep it running until the end of March.

shop TIL YOU DROP

I just realised that I never really went into detail
about the monthly illustrations i've been working on
for Aussie mag, Shop 'Til You Drop.

Those of you who read my blog are most likely familiar
with the lovely miss Annabel of LoveMore, who, coincidently,
happens to be one of my gal pals and the model for these illustrations.
You may have already recognised her or seen the scans
she posted up on her blog today!

I asked Bel to pose for me because A) I love her look,
    B) She knows how to work an outfit,
and C) She gets just as enthusiastic about these ideas as I do!

So if you haven't already seen the illos in the mag,
pick up a copy of the December issue of Shop,
(with Hermoine herself, Miss Emma Watson, on the cover)
and flick to page 148 for Bel in all her glory!
(And a gorgeous Don't Ask Amanda jumpsuit!)

I've also posted the past illos here & here:
(Or check out LoveMore for the scans)

    Happy Friday everyone!
    Enjoy your weekends.

fallen ARTICLE

The new issue of Aus mag FALLEN (#3) features a little
article/interview about me written by Stephanie Chapman!
FALLEN is actually one of my FAVE Aussie publications,
purely because of it's beautiful design and dedication to
promoting Australian fashion, art and culture.
Both Lauren and Kara do such an amazing job,
as do their bevvy of contributers.
It's so hard to believe how few people are involved in
the making of a mag of this calibre.

To read my little feature, click the image below.
    It should hopefully enlarge!

Thanks again to the girls for featuring me.

the NEW TRIBES

    Shop 'Til You Drop
    November 2009

Today is one of those fun days where I actually get to show you guys
something that i've been working on for a while!
I recently started working with the lovely Brooke Bickmore at
Shop 'Til You Drop on a series of monthly illustrations
that feature in the new Q&A section of the magazine.
But last month Brooke commissioned some more illos for a story about
the 'new tribes' of dressers these days which
appears in the November issue, on sale today.
Think of yourself channelling the Olsen twins, Blair Waldorf, Kate Moss or
Gwyneth Paltrow and you may fall into one of the above categories!
This was SUPER fun to work on and i'm excited to finally
see it in print and share it with you guys!

I'll post more about the monthly illustrations in the next few days.

Also big thanks to everyone who left a question on the below post.
I'll probably wait a week or so to answer so if you still have a Q
then feel free to leave a comment here.

Hope you all had great weekends!

masked AVENGER

    Pencil & Digital Colouring

New illustration to go with little Lady Moineau.
I suddenly found myself with a HUUUUGE collection of mask images
so I thought - 'why not incorporate one into an illustration!'
I'm planning something a little special with this series I think.
    Stay tuned!

Hope you all struggled (well) through your Mondays.
It's oh so very Garfield of me...but I hate Monday.
    Glad it's almost over!

OH! On a brighter note - I have an illustration in the latest
issue of Shop 'Til You Drop with Chloe Sevigny on the cover.
I don't have a copy yet so can't post it.
But, if you feel like having a perusal -
you can pick up a copy as of today!
    Xx

P.S I hope I got my French correct again Miss Noemi? x
P.P.S I just noticed after I published this that the whole 'hair in hands' thing
is very reminiscent of the Lily pic below. I wonder what Freud would say?

icon INTERVIEW

    Wow.
Flattered big time I was to be asked a few questions
earlier in the year for fashion hub CHECKYOUdaily's Icon section.
    What a gargantuan compliment!
I spy Toni Maticevski in their list - yowza.

If you're interested in reading my little Q&A it's just been put up
so pop over to CHECKYOUdaily by clicking here.
There's also a little slideshow of my favourite things.
(DK's butt is not one of them - Haha. Her Atelier Versace dress is though!)

    Xx

    P.S Love this:
"Uses contemporary supermodels as paper dolls of her own design
and redresses them in a remix of designer collections."
I hadn't thought of it like that before - how fun! :)

P.P.S I'm watching Dumbo right now for research purposes
    (I LOVE MY JOB SERIOUSLY!)
and I can't not cry at the 'Baby of Mine' scene.
Does anyone else have that problem?
    Should I even admit that?

    HAPPY FRIDAY! x

the waiting GAME

    Vogue Australia July 2009

I was super flattered to be asked by Vogue Australia
to do an illustration for the article 'The Waiting Game.'
It's all about the obsession with each season's current
'IT' item and the resulting waiting list that comes with it.

Outfits/pieces featured from left to right:
    Alexander Wang (Denim Bag)
    Yves Saint Laurent (Cage Boots)
    Balmain (THAT Military Jacket)
    Christopher Kane (Dress)

Speaking of TO DIE FOR items, I spent a hefty chunk of my
day looking through the Chanel website and drooling over
every bag and every pair of shoes until I came to THESE:

Remember these? I posted a few weeks back about
Diane Kruger in Cannes and her amaaaaaazing shoes.
I'm not usually one to get all super excited about shoes
but Dear. God. I want these. I need these.
    I'll probably DREAM about these.
They were even used in a photo shoot on last night's
episode of Australia's Next Top Model.
    It's fate.

    ANYWAY
    - momentary shoe-induced lapse of concentration -
if you want to read the article click the image
to see a little snippet! Or go buy the mag for the rest :)

Aussie beauty Myf Shepard graces the cover
wearing Aussie label Romance Was Born.
It's all about the Aussie love!

see EMILY PLAY

    Photographer: Macushla Burke
    Illustrator: Kelly Smith
    Stylist: Sher Tualla
    Model: Rhia @ Viviens

A couple of months ago I collaborated with Melbourne
photographer, Macushla Burke, on an illustrated editorial.
You can check it out in the current issue of Cream Magazine,
    which comes out today!

I've yet to see it in print, but I figured it was safe to post
the images on my blog now that the mag is out.

I absolutely loved the editorial when Cush emailed it to me
and it was so much fun to work on.
In addition to her rock chick vibe I wanted to go with an
'Almost Famous' sort of feel...which led to thoughts of
Kate Hudson and Chris Robinson which of course led to
    The Black Crowes.
At any rate I think it all worked out perfectly!

    Hope you like.
